Spend Time Outdoors to Reduce Stress and Gain Energy

Do you believe in the power of nature? I do. Time in nature has always done wonders for my mental health. When you’re feeling down, exhausted, and stressed out, one of the most effective things to do to feel better is to spend time in nature.

Here are some of the benefits of spending time in nature:

  1. Reduced Cortisol Levels - a study done in 2010 by Park, B.J et al,  says that exposure to natural environments can lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. It has shown that spending time in green spaces can significantly decrease cortisol concentrations in the body.

  2. Improved Mood and Mental Health -  Nature has a calming effect on the mind. It helps in alleviating symptoms of anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. According to a study by Berman, M.G., et. al, in 2012, participants who walked in natural environments reported improved moods compared to those who walked in urban settings.

  3. Enhanced Cognitive Function - Being in nature improves cognitive function including focus, memory, and creativity. The “restorative effect” of nature aids the mind in recovering from mental fatigue and stress.

  4. Increased Physical Activity - nature encourages more physical activity, it could be with walking, hiking or even gardening. Physical exercise releases endorphins which is a known natural stress reliever.

  5. Improved Sleep - exposure to natural light and fresh air helps regulate sleep patterns. It improves the quality and duration of sleep.

  6. Better Social Interactions - nature often provides more opportunities for social activities and interaction with others. It boosts mood and reduces the feelings of isolation. In 2009, a study by Maas, J. et al, showed that people living near green spaces have higher levels of social support and lower levels of stress.

Here are some things you can do to spend time in nature even when you’re busy:

  • Take Short Outdoor Breaks - You can use your lunch or coffee breaks to step outside . A 10-minute walk around the block or even sitting in a nearby park can provide a refreshing break from your work environment.

  • Bring Nature Indoors - Add something green to your workspace. Indoor plants can improve air quality and create a more calming environment.

  • Nature Sounds and Scents - Use nature sounds or white noise apps to create a calming atmosphere in your office. Scents like lavender and eucalyptus can also add a relaxing environment.

  • Weekend Nature Getaways - Plan quick nature trips on weekends. Joining day retreats, visiting local parks, nature reserves, or hiking trails can provide a more immersive nature experience, helping you recharge for the week ahead.

  • Join Outdoor Groups or Classes - Participate in outdoor activities organised by community groups like yoga, retreats, nature photography. These activities can help you stay committed to spending time outdoors.
